draft trades free agency....been saying it for years
I think the draft is overrated, Rams success rate on first rounders for 40 years is less than 40%......look at their draft history
different GMs, coaches etc.
2nd round for every I Bruce we get a Quick or Pead...cheap labor yes, but they don't help the team
then i hear the argument if 4th rounders dont make the team....oh yeah success rate for a 4th rounder is 10% (or whatever low # you put in there).
So you have to do these things...good teams do.
Talib will be gone 2 years, Suh probably....frees cap space to pick up more free agents....problem solved....keep drafting and hope a few players stick
One is the DPOY.
I don't understand you trying to use the Rams draft results as an indicator that the first round is overrated. That doesn't make any sense.
SF, Dallas, GB, Pitt and Seattle all built their dominant teams through the draft.
That's how you build for the long term!
None of the teams you cite have won anything in forever.
Things have changed since the 2011 CBA.
Winning teams are building more and more through trades and free agency.
Look at Philly. Multiple trades and free agents.
NE has been doing trades and smart short term free agent pick ups for a while now.
The GB and Pitt model of only building through the draft is outdated. Obsolete!
I certainly didn't say that I have anything against trades, that's ridiculous BUT I maintain that you build
long term success through the draft.
You cite the Patriots a lot as an example of how to do things.
WHY are they stockpiling draft picks every year? They fill in players through trades to compensate for their poor drafting.
But the players that drive that engine were draft picks. The Cowboys, SF, Pitt model is NOT obsolete.
Seattle came closes to it that we've seen other than the Pats and they did it through the draft.
So that model is not obsolete, what's obsolete IS dynasties in football.Just because things have changed doesn't mean that they have changed for the better!!
This Rams team is built primary through the draft.
Goff, Gurley, AD, Kupp, 3/5 of the OL, the TE's, the DL, the LB's, both safties...all through the draft.
The Pats had not been stockpiling draft picks prior to this year. They only had 4 last year. Why? Because they traded them away.
If the Rams fill in through trades to supplement their good drafting, that's even better than what the Pats are doing.
Smart teams are using trades because the trade market is undervalued and underutilized.
Whether things have changed for the better or not I don't know. I just know that since the '11 CBA, the way successful teams are building has drastically changed.
Fortunately, Snead is aware of this and has the Rams on the cutting edge of team building methods.
