It’s entirely possible that at some point this offseason Tavon’s roster spot value will exceed any perceived Tavon potential value.
The way this roster talent has been raised recently tells us that that could come rather quickly.
If, or perhaps I should say “when” that occurs, then either they have a fire sale in an attempt to garner a measly 7th or they just outright release him at no cost.
I wouldn’t count on Tavon being a Ram come opening day.
Here's a different perspective based on things reported about the Rams thinking.
Austin staying is a result of Watkins leaving.
It's been reported that McVay got pretty worried once Watkins left and as a contingency they decided to see if he could make better use of Tavon as a weapon.
Obviously that's no sure thing and they didn't want to do it at his salary. Hence, the reworking of the contract.
That tells me, Tavon stays on the roster this year... Unless they trade for OBJ...
All due respect, dz, but the idea that the Rams would keep Tavon as a replacement thrweat for Watkins? Or anybody else?
The same Tavon that had 13 receptions for a whopping 47 yards last year? THAT Tavon?
Ummmmm...
Okaaaaay...
Ummm 43, this was reported by someone who got this from the Rams, I believe it was Gonzalez.
Secondly, TA isn't to be THE replacement for Watkins. That's a misrepresentation of what I said.
The idea is for him to be PART of the solution. Everett and Reynolds stepping up the other parts.
True, dz. I mean that McVay said those words.
And I happen to believe that McVay genuinely has high hopes for both Reynolds and Everett this year. Maybe Thomas, too.
But Tavon as a serious receiving threat doesn’t pass my laugh test. And I doubt that opposing DC’s are losing much sleep over seeing him as a WR threat, either.
I doubt that Tavon makes the 53 this year, tbh. And it won’t be about the money, obviously, because he represents zero cost to the Rams anymore. It will be because there will be 53, or more, better options that McVay prefers for his roster.
