The first thing to point out is this:
Has JJ or TruJ come anywhere close to matching Marcus Peters on the field? Granted, I believe Tru J did have 1 year with 6 or 7 INTs. But Peters does it every year!! At only 25 years old.
Every metric I have read says that MP is a top 5 man cover corner.
That can't be said about either JJ or TruJ.
The problem, of course, is Peters' volatility and whether he can be handled so as not be a locker room cancer. Answer? Don't know.
But clearly the Rams think the answer is yes. The Rams are a "new school" team; the KC is old school. Maybe that'll help, maybe not. TBD.
Your take seems to include a bit of desperation on the Rams part. I don't sense that at all. This doesn't smack of desperation, it smacks of moving from 2 good to very good CBs, to an elite top 5 shut down corner. It feels like pouncing on a rare opportunity to get a young All Pro skill position player.
As for McCleod. I really am still not sure how to think about that move to let him walk. Has he reached All-Pro level? No.Is he a good player? Yes. But he got All-Pro money. This, I suppose, is always the dilemma teams face, as the
Rams are now especially with Watkins. IMO resigning Joyner is a done deal. He is not only a superb FS, but he can play anywhere in the secondary equally as well. The only issue is what the final numbers will be. But whatever they'll be, only paying MP a paultry $1.7 mil in 2018, and a max of about $9 mil in 2019 is a significant factor in being able to pay Joyner what he needs.
So if the Rams begin the off season with $40 mil to spend on FAs, they've only depleted it by $1.7 mil. Heck of a thing.
