Specifically with the handling of Trumaine Johnson, Janoris Jenkins and Rodney McCleod ALL young homegrown talent.
Heading into the off-season supposedly according to the Rams themselves, the mission was to retain their defensive backfield.
My assessment is that they failed on all fronts. The Rams ended up losing McCleod for a mere pittance financially, low balling Janoris Jenkins and alienating him to the point of no return, and not being able to sign Trumaine long term essentially wasting over $33M.
McCleod played very well in Philly and is now a SB champion.
Janoris Jenkins got a reasonable contract for his talent and position and became an All-pro in NY.
Note: Deadpool Janoris has played very well in NY and this season there was team wide mutiny. Things were BAD in that organization.
Trumaine has pocketed over $33M from the Rams over the last two seasons and in return the Rams got 3 turnovers from him!!
Now their defensive backfield is in tatters. That is a colossal failure in my book and part and parcel of why the Rams had to increase their wager. The problem with that however is when chasing gambling losses, you tell yourself that you need to double down to recoup your losses.
That never works.I recently said that the Rams are a smart organization now and I believe that wholeheartedly, but they are taking a huge risk chasing gambling losses.
Its not about being right its about getting it right and I give the Rams credit for that.I hope that Marcus Peters pays off.
.
Under the Fisher regime the mistakes they made in the secondary are well documented.
Tru was decent but clearly the wrong choice as a 2 time franchise tag decision vs signing Jenkins long term.
The loss of McCleod should've never happened but he and the jack rabbit were no guarantee the Rams would have beat the Falcons and Vikings and Eagles in the 2017 playoffs. Goff and McVay were not ready to perform under the Hollywood lights.
Anyway, the Peters acquisition in some ways seems like compensation for those mistakes (assuming Peters provides the impact without self destructing) and hurting the team 2018 when he officially suites up in the horns.
I get the gist of your post and I have to admit I was fine with Tru over the jack rabbit at the time for my own personal reasons.
I wasn't 100% sure at the time but I didn't have the convictions you did at the time. McCleod should've been retained but he's never been a big loss in my opinion even though they should've kept him.
Regardless of all that........ It's water under the bridge for me. This team needed a new head coach and the Jenkins and McCleod losses as bad as they were, have no bearing on the 2018 Rams..
I know that's not what you ultimately meant but the McVay/Snead Rams have turned the page for me with those to mishaps.
I just cant go back to the past and ponder what could've been.. That's just me though but you get kudos for getting the what should the Rams do with Jenkins/McCleod correct at that time..
