Hard to define what is “fair” anymore.
1) It is hard to say that the cap will keep going up forever. Anybody been paying attention to falling attendance and falling TV ratings these past few years? Anybody doubt that the new TV contract won’t reflect those declines? That’s where the cap dollars come from, you know. So it might be a mistake to extend a player to an obscene extension while banking on endless cap raises. Like residential real estate prices in SoCal in 2008?
2) AD is a DT, not a QB. Granted, he’s the best DT in the game. Maaaaaybe even the best D player, although I think there are others in that conversation. But DT’s don’t get QB salaries. No matter how well they play or how much some fans love to watch them play. Just the way it is.
3) We can win either with or without AD. So, if AD continues to refuse to extend, and the Rams receive a blockbuster trade offer that they can’t refuse? Well, I wouldn’t rule out a trade under those conditions.
As to Goff? He’s a “must have” now. Absolutely untradeable. Period. NO team would trade away a young, healthy, ascending franchise QB. We don’t even know how high his ceiling is anymore, now that McVay is coaching him up.
