First, I'll stipulate that the JJ contract extension was bungled. Hindsight tells us that.
Second, I'll stipulate that we'll never know for sure since the FO will never confirm anything.
But, as Occam's Razor suggests, I think that the simplest explanation is the most likely. Namely, that the Rams wanted both CB's but set a ceiling on JJ's value that was too low and resulted in upsetting him and ultimately losing him. I think it's just that simple. I'll admit that at the time I thought that they had chosen the correct strategy. I was wrong.
On TruJo they compounded their problem by assuming that they could readily extend him. Epic fail there for two years running. Oops!
Bottom line is that they will have lost two quality starting CB's since the end of the '15 season. Not good. I'm sure that they would love a do over on both those players.
But it's not devastating. They can and will reload their CB roster via draft and FA under the guidance of Wade. Of this I have no doubt. In fact, it's just possible that we have a couple of starting caliber CB's not named TruJo on this roster already.
As an aside, I hope that we can avoid duplicating this CB fubar with our S position. Let's get Joyner and Alexander extended in a friendly and timely manner. I don't want a revolving door of personnel in our entire secondary, dammit!
