for the record I wanted to signed both JJ and Tru to long term deals. Nevertheless, they are 2 and 3 in terms of a salary cap hit at the cb position in 2017

2 Trumaine Johnson $16,742,400
3 Janoris Jenkins $15,000,000

is one appreciably better then then other? In terms of last year, JJ clearly had the better year, but in 2015 I would say it was Tru. How will each perform in 2017?
Over the course of their careers, I think you might consider them equal talents.

JJ's deal is essentially 5 years for 62.5 M or 12.5 a year. Just for 2016/17, it was 8 M before and 15 M this year for 23 M combined.

Tru in 2016/17 got roughly 14 M in 2016 and 16.7 M in 2017, which is 30.7 M combined. So that's a 7.7 M difference.

Plus of course with JJ, you would have the player for 5 years, and with Tru it's 2 tags then no deal.

Are they comparable players? IMO no. Tru is good, but JJ is a top 10 CB.

So my vote is that the deal was bungled. My theory is this. Demoff was no longer doing contracts, that's Pastoors now. In fact Demoff was far too busy with the move and all the logistics of that, so he wasn't doing contracts in 2016. However, Demoff was a contracts veteran, and Pastoors far less so...IMO what happened is that the rookie negotiator played some hardball with JJ and JJ just got insulted by it and walked away.

As it happens in this case, the man in the building who understood the value of an NFL db was Fisher. Far more than anyone else except Williams. During the crucial stage of JJ's negotiation he was on his vacation. IMO they should have just listened to JF.

So anyway I think they handed the thing to a more green contracts man and he screwed it up.

My take is that JJ is the better CB, and that having him on a long term deal that for 2016/17 (which would amount to 7.7 M less than Tru for 2016/17) versus having Tru for more $$$ without a long term deal is, yes, bungling it.

Usually the Rams are very good with contracts, but then that was when Demoff was doing them. Demoff is far less involved in that now and has a whole lot of move related stuff to focus on.
