This isn't so much about Woods as it is the receiver group as a whole. Like I said, I'm fine with Woods, but in a different role. Britt, Quick and Kendricks accounted for 159 catches 2065 yards and 10 TD's. Are these 4 new guys going to cover those numbers? I think that's alot to ask from a guy that's never had 700 yards receiving and 3 rookies. I'm just continuously disappointed in the receivers the Rams continue to trot out there. They will continue to be the worst unit in the league until they prove otherwise IMO. They need a difference maker. Not a bunch of role players like they have now IMO.
It's a 4 year vet who was never given the opportunity, so let's not make the mistake of forgetting Buffalo's situation and acting like that's all he'll ever be. Remember---near as I know, no one who has watched him play enough to know who he is downgrades the guy, it's just the "read numbers without a context" guys who downgrade him.
And it's not just 3 rookies.
At WR/TE, in terms of potential contributors from last year who could end up being at least decently productive this year, I count Cooper, Austin, Higbee, and Hemingway. Maybe another emerges. Then there's Rogers too, who reminds me of the classic WCO pass catching FB types. So that's 8 guys to fill 3 other slots besides Woods and Gurley.
And we don't know how it will turn out.
That means--we actually don't know. Not the "I don't know and therefore will assume the worst" version of "I don't know," but the actually real "we have no idea and no one is in a position to say anything real yet" version of I don't know.
We actually really have no honest idea whether they have downgraded or upgraded.
But, I look at it, and, I am not convinced it's a bad situation. I see them being decently productive as a group. Maybe no one will become Britt circa 2016, but then I can see it turning out this way, if I am just going to speculate---namely, it will be a combination of guys and taken as a group they will be better and more productive in 2017 than they were in 2016 when it was Britt + no one. So in the middle of "I don't know" my fairly optimistic view is that while I would not trade Britt for any individual player from this group, I would ALSO not trade this group for a repeat of Britt + no one.
BTW they could have had Britt for less than Woods, which tells me they didn't want Britt. (I say they could have had him for less because Britt's first year deal with the Browns is only around 5+ M. My bet is if they were willing to pay 5 M they could have kept Britt.) Which begs the question, WHY didn't they want him. Well obviously this group of coaches didn't think he was worth keeping. That's based no doubt on watching film of 2016.
