Why is it McVay's problem to develop a QB? Because he is the HC? Are defensive orientated HCs also supposed to develop QBs?
Typically, its the QB coach (I'm assuming thats why teams hire them) and the OCs job to develop the QB. Sure McVay is the playcaller, but his focus is the entire team, as where the OC and QBC are there specifically for the offense and the QB.
Which leads me to my next point: McVays offensive staff gets raided yearly. Look who he's lost:
OC - LeFluer after 2017
QB coach - Olson - after 2017
QB coach - Taylor after 2018
OC - O'Connell after 2021
QB coach - Robinson after 2023
He's also lost 3 passing game coordinators along the way:.Waldron after 2020, Evero after 2021 and Phillips after 2021
If any of you listen to NFL radio, these guys talk about how difficult it is to have new OCs year after year. In fact just today they were saying Bryce Young will be on his 3rd OC in 12 months. Same for Pickett in Pitts.
QBs and QB coaches develop relationships, thats hard to do when you only have a year or so to do it.
Does McVay need to get more involved? Maybe, but his expertise is WR, thats what he played in college. I think just stabilizing the OC and QB coach spot would go a long ways to developing a young QB.
Perkins and Wolfe are poor examples of developing a QB because both were UDFAs. Seriously.
But that does bring me to my last point: If McVay or the Rams organization really don't want to develop QBs, then why draft Bennett, or sign Perkins and Wolfe? Cheap labor? Go get a QB at the vet minimum and call it a day.
So go get a decent QB, say Penix Jr in round 2 as an example
Quality QB with lots of experience
Solidify your OC and QBC spots
give him years and see what you have.
Until those things happen, I'm not buying the McVay wont or cant develop a QB argument or theory.
