If McVay has a demonstrated weak point or maybe a personal bent, I'd say that it is a failure to develop young QBs.
In fact, I'm not at all sure that he even wants to. It seems that it is very hard for him to ever trust a young QB to win games for him the way a QB must. That he gave up on Goff, who was by no means chopped liver, and was never a discipline or ego problem, and had plenty of NFL talent, is one example. His inability to get anything out of Wolford or Perkins, and now with no doubt helping to choose some ghost named Bennett as a potential back up, makes me suspicious.
So, what is a McVay kind of QB? I think it is anything but a young inexperienced QB. He went all in to get Stafford, but why? What was it? I'd say it was because of his extensive experience, a superb leadership quality, an amazing toughness, a rare arm talent, and.....an aggressive gunslinger mentality. McVay DOES NOT WANT a game manager.
But, I also think McVay is observant enough to know that even if you take a QB number 1 in the draft, you usually won't know for at least 3 years if you got a truly good QB or just a wanna be or a flash in the pan. Sure, every now and then you strike gold with a QB draft pick. But the odds are never in your favor. And, McVay will not stand for a losing season. That one losing season crushed him, and you can see in the bounce back why he is a great and determined coach.
I predict that the Rams will not draft a QB except perhaps in the 4th round or later and it will be more of a lark than a serious effort to find Stafford's eventual replacement. I also predict that Stafford's eventual replacement will be another big signing of a very good vet QB that McVay doesn't have to raise from a puppy because he just doesn't have the patience for it.
I also predict that McVay will do everything he can to keep Stafford playing as long as he can. I'll eat my hat if Stafford isn't the Rams QB until he is at least 40. His arm is still tremendous, he even slimmed down and demonstrated a mobility I hadn't seen in him before. And, this year, other than the thumb injury, his body didn't take nearly the beating and he'll have a nice, healthy off season.
