McVay is a work in progress, and a very good work with a potential upside reaching for the stars.

Last year's field ambulance parade through the playing field was a pariah that no head coach could have won through. We have to dismiss that part of McVay's record in assessing his tenure.

Is he above reproach? Is his a sacrosanct position, above all criticism? No.

Is he uber talented and with a track record already that is enviable? Yes.

I can't think of any great coach, save Bill Walsh, who hit the league winning consistently and who continued to win consistently throughout their career. But Bill Walsh came into the league as a mature veteran coach from a quasi-pro program, not a thirty-year old with no head coaching experience and a one-limbed coaching tree background.

McVay is continuing to learn, continuing to grow as a coach and a human being. The two are interlocked. He's the sort of man I'd like to have as a friend or live in the house next door.

By contrast, I'd sell if Belichick moved into the neighborhood for fear he'd poison my dog or something, and wouldn't let him into the house if he knocked on the door in the next five minutes.
