I agree that this is definitely an unfair situation for RBs. If there is an easy fix, why not try to make it a bit more fair?
The most workable solution I have heard is to limit rookie RB contracts to three years instead of four. The whole issue of RBs getting "used up" in a way that doesn't happen at any other position warrants this.
-Or- and I like this idea. Let RBs void their rookie contract when they reach a certain number of touches. Once they hit 700 total touches (for instance) their rookie deal voids at the end of their current year.
But bear in mind, that savvy (unscrupulous) coaches and owners will probably work a system such as that in a way that can still screw the player.
