and he's a starter... was last year as a Jr. as well. Yes, there is an overlap... in fact it's a BIG overlap from football to basketball.... however, there is a rule... not sure if it's 'written' or 'unwritten' that an athlete cannot be penalized for playing two or more sports. Obviously that's a 'loose' rule as a coach 'could' say a player was demoted for not being as good as another player when the real reason could be a penalty for playing two sports... but I don't know of that ever happening... at least not here. I think our coaches have been very fair about that. And no, my grandson has no time to go to 'school' basketball practice while football is going on... he CAN, however, play any pickup tournaments on weekends.... so far there hasn't been any but there WILL be soon. Last year he played 2 or 3 basketball tournaments (preseason obviously) while football was still being played.
There is also a pretty big overlap from basketball to baseball... depending on how deep the basketball team gets into the playoffs. My grandson was caught up in that last year as well since he plays football, basketball, and baseball.... he went from a starter in baseball to the bench BUT... no way that was the 'coaches' fault. We had a fantastic baseball team... they went 23-0 in regular season... got moved up a Div for the playoffs and lost their first playoff game to a team that moved DOWN one division. At 23-0 I wouldn't have started my grandson either.
The baseball coach allowed my grandson to run Track during baseball season because of this... he didn't have to do that!
Ok, divisions in football... it's computer generated.... until the final game is played many teams have no idea which division they'll play in... school size IS a factor but ONLY in where they 'start' at the beginning of the season. So if a team 'starts' in Div V they can't move up higher than Div IV. Same thing in reverse. As I corrected myself... now you can only move up or down 1 division.... last year there was no limit. Last year it was 'possible' for a D1 school of 4,000 students to move down to a division with schools under 500 in population.
I'm almost certain they'll change again next year because it's still very unfair.... but I could be wrong! - JamesJM
