I'm a 50 y.o. African-American who suffers from a co-morbidity (high blood pressure caused, in part, by recent LA Ram QB-issues). I wanted to sign-up for one of the testing trials over the summer, but couldn't get the family to back me up due to historical "guinea pig" concerns with African-Americans. Thought it should be an "all or nothing" type of decision. I'm also a sworn peace officer (but not a 1st responder).
Long story short...I plan on taking the vaccine as soon as it's made available to me.
As an aside...
My wife works in a hospital in an administrative function. In mid-December, shortly after the first, vaccine was pushed out, the hospital asked all employees whether or not they'd LIKE to get vaccinated - not necessarily that they WOULD get the opportunity.
My wife declined believing that political pressure dictated the approval of the vaccine as opposed to science. And no...she hasn't made an attempt to educate herself by reading any scientific journals on the safety and efficacy of the vaccines. This is despite the fact that she lost her father to Covid back in the spring.
Anyways...fast forward to a couple of weeks ago when the anti-masker in my wife's department became infected and was too weak to even telework. Of course, everyone in the office had been exposed and my wife needed to get tested. She was definitely concerned, but ultimately
tested negative.
In an effort to keep the marriage intact, I've decided not to bring up the fact that she declined the opportunity to get vaccinated, but then put herself at risk due to the exposure.
I can only hope that she's thought about it, though.
