want to program ON the drum machine itself.. Ok, on the outputs, I looked at the SR-18 is different than my HR-16 in that the HR-16 has two sets of L/R outs, meaning you have two (#1 and #2) different sets of left and right outputs.. that way I can put kick drum coming out of #1 output Left channel and snare coming out of #1 output Right channel.. In the DRUM MACHINE I pan the kick drum all the way left and the snare all the way right..
Now people are gonna yell that that means kick is only in your left speaker and snare in only in the right speaker, but that's not how its set up.. All that does is forces ALL the kick to go through the #1 output Left channel and ALL the snare to go through the #1 Right channel.. you plug a 1/4" jack into each #1 Left and Right outputs, then plug the other end of each 1/4" plug into, say, Channel 1 and Channel 2 on your PA mixer.. that way you have TOTAL control over kick drum and snare in your PA, just like if you were mic'ing a drum set..
What I then do, is do a pre-mix of ALL the other drums.. all the toms, cymbals, hi-hat, cowbell etc.. and I pan them where they should be in the mix - like hi-hats would be more right, floor toms more left, rack toms going from right to left etc.. I also set each additional drum up to go through the #2 output channel jacks. I then run a 1/4" cable from each #2 output channel jack to channels 3 and 4 on the PA mixing board.. that way on the PA I have total control on kick drum on channel 1, total control on snare drum on channel 2, and then a "mix" of all the other drums on channels 3 and 4.. confusing, isn't it? Its actually really easy - it just sounds complicated..
So, on YOUR SR-18 setup, you have this.. this is what I would try as I'm ASSUMING this is how its set up:
Aux L/R - plug into Channel 3 on your PA mixing board (set all drums/cymbals other than snare and kick to go to this output)
Main Right - plug into Channel 2 on your PA mixing board (set snare drum to go to this output)
Main Left - plug into Channel 1 on your PA mixing board (set kick drum to go to this output)
Headphone - strictly used for headphones.. I use headphones to program the drum machine
I think they just combined the #2 set of Left/Right outputs into one Aux output, but I don't know for sure.. If the setup I suggest doesn't work, you'd probably have to set ALL the drums to come out the Main Left and Right outputs.. that would be harder to mix through the PA, tho as you wouldn't have complete control over kick/snare..
Anyways, I'll help you all I can.. a lot of it sounds difficult, but is pretty easy once you get rolling.. if you have any other questions, feel free to holler!
Here's the back of my HR-16 for reference:
