When I was in the USAF, we deployed to Biggs Airfield, El Paso. One night off, we caught a ride to town to check out a few Bars. At 11:30 - Midnight, we were on our own to get back to the Base. We were all 20-24 years old so we said...Lets walk it! Was only about 3-4 miles. We passed by a pick up truck in a parking lot with a guy and his lady making out. We are drunk and start yelling...OH YEAH!! GET A ROOM!! etc.....Just being silly. We had gone 100 -200 yards past when that truck pulled out and slowly approached from behind. I thought...OH CRAP! We've done it now. The fella says....I take it you are Base bound? We say "Yes we are". He says...You fellas better jump in the back. You are about a half block from a very dangerous area. GEEEEEESH!! Was he right!! We drove up to an area that had tons of rather sketchy / mean looking people and then he turned. He took us about a mile out of the way but around a sh** hole part of town. When we got to the Base, we each gave the guy a $20, even though he insisted we did not. THE Big Man was watching over us that night! We all went on duty the next morning with a "WHEEEW!" attitude. And.......Feeling like Jack A$$es for giving that nice guy and his sweet lady a hard time before they saved our butts!
