Back then the studios controlled the actors lives. They groomed them, determined their looks, their public persona, even the name they used.
So many stars had huge secrets back then, i.e., Clark Gable's affair with Loretta Young and their illegitimate child. Rock Hudson... you could go on on and on.
That's not the case today.
