I don't suffer from insomnia so I can't imagine what that must be like to want to go to sleep.. and you can't.
I am usually wired even when I'm tired and it's rare that I can go to sleep as soon as I crawl into bed. My body is tired but my brain says "I'm not!". What helps me go to sleep is using a sleep app on my iPhone called "Bettersleep". Most of the app is a bunch of stuff you have to pay for and I ain't doing' that. I just use the few Sound freebies available on the app. That's really all I need. The one that almost always works for me is "lapping water". It's not like the sound of waves crashing on the shore.. it's like gentle waves slapping against the pier. My brain finds the sound very relaxing. I set the timer on 40 minutes, put the phone on the mattress above my pillow, turn out the lights and turn the tv off, and I'm usually asleep before the 40 minutes is up. I don't think I've ever taken any sort of pill to help me fall asleep.
