Goff wasn't always Goff either. He wasn't always captain checkdown. Stafford isn't a clone of present day Goff but what I said is true. Stafford has been getting more inconsistent with each game. That pick last night was exactly the type of error that led to Goff being shipped off. I mean, failing to throw the ball away to the point of it being picked? That was awful.
Granted, Stafford has overcome his recent arctic starts but that inconsistency is exactly what he was supposed to solve, not perpetuate. And it isn't like there are adjustments in play calls being made to solve the problem, he just goes from missing open receivers to finally connecting with them.
And, I think there was some concern by McVay too considering the draw play on 3rd and 10 earlier in the game. The fact that Stafford is having to dig himself out of these ruts is the problem. Sure, one can look at it from the other side and commend him for overcoming a bad start but I'm more concerned with why he's having these bad starts. They seem to be entirely of his own making.
