First, nearly all hires are "friend" hires. HC's don't run around hiring guys to run their O or D that they don't already have a relationship with.
Second, I find it most unlikely that after Staley, McVay would hire a younger version of Wade Phillips to replace him. He knows that today's O's can't be contained with simple coverages that are obvious, stale and simple to detect.
Third, GB didn't figure out Staley; the Rams played poorly on both sides of the ball and AD was a shadow of himself due to his injury. And, GB must be given credit for playing well that day. They were the better team last year.
Bottom line: naturally we won't know for several games into the season how Morris will affect the D. I'm neither negative or positive about it. I'm in wait and see mode. I don't think McVay has made a bad hire yet. Other teams are so enamored with his choices that the Rams coaching staff is raided mercilessly every year and he's always having to replenish it. No reason to think Morris won't do just fine.
Gotta agree about the quality of McVay’s coaching hires. Through his first 4 years I think Bonamego was his only bust. So, why should we not expect excellence in this, his 5th year?
