The problem on most team boards is fans digging in on one side of the extreme or the other. I have no problem though calling his Miami or SF games for the pile of excrement they were, even as many were making excuses and blaming other things like McVay. Or for that matter giving him cred when he had a great game vs Tampa, even as many were making excuses and giving all the credit to McVay.
I'm of the mind that the players really matter too. Which not all fans are.
As to 2021 in Detroit I'm not sure which guy it will be to be honest. But I do think he's got a lack of weapons in that offense thus I don't see a top performing season for him statistically. But that's something he can turn in his favor if he is patient and careful with the ball, by leading them to some meaningful wins. And I hope they have a strong run game. Because if they don't things might get ugly for him.
I don't remember anyone blaming Goff's performance in either the Miami or SF games on McVay. Not sure where you got that from. I think part of the whole sides/extremes thing is inventing sides and extremes. The one argument I heard about the Miami game is that McVay could have run the ball to win that day. A comment like that does not blame Goff's
performance that game on McVay.
My own take is that in 2020 Goff had 4 bad games and that the main culprit in all 4 games--which were full of multiple Goff turnovers---was Goff's bad tendency to press to make plays when he shouldn't. When instead he should have run (and slide when he runs), get out of bounds, throw the ball away, or take the sack.
You are right that Goff was inconsistent in 2020 though of course that includes good games like Tampa (and others). It's not unusual for a 5th year qb to be THAT inconsistent--Stafford was in HIS 5th year.
My own view of the Goff controversy is that the discussion gets bogged down with hyperbole. As a self-identified history type, I just think hyperbole is bad history. There are some for example who have said that Goff could not read defenses (!!). Well you don't have the Tampa game and other games and good play in the playoffs on the road if you cannot read defenses. It's that kind of hyperbole that I often call out.
I think Goff left because he and McVay were in this huge disconnect (McVay has admitted to not communicating effectively) and so it was just a bad marriage. When that happens it won't be your young winning coach who leaves.
And I never complained about the trade. Stafford is a good acquisition. He's a physically talented, savvy veteran who has been there and done that and seen it all. He has a chance to be better than even Warner as the top qb the Rams have fielded since I started following them in the 70s.
