A star free agent qb can use leverage when getting offers to have a big signing bonus. The bigger the bonus the worse for the team if he leaves early. If there is a bidding war, then he player can fight to keep those terms out of the contract. If the deal is before free agency, the player can only sign with the team he is on, then the qb can just choose not to sign a contract with those terms in place. Both sides will adjust over time. I think what will happen is smaller signing bonuses, and more guaranteed salaries for each year. Less up front money, but later years are guaranteed. If the player forces his way out, then there is not a cap hit (or a smaller one) and the guarantees are now the new team's issue.
