I just don't get it. How many guys like this ever make it in the NFL at the most difficult position perhaps in all of pro sports?
Here's a kid with only a handful of starts, on a run first team, that is a smaller program. Yeah, he's a heck of a physical specimen. Howitzer for an arm. So was Carson Wentz. And a bunch of other wow-type college physical specimen QBs that flunked out in the NFL.
Assuming Jimmy G. starts (they really have no other choice if they don't want to start a back-up vet), then how does Lance progress from the bench other than learning the playbook..... at least on an academic level? He starts way behind just from a college career standpoint. The young man needs reps..... zillions of reps he's not had.... not classroom theories. To me, he is a 2nd round pick at best (just as Jordan Love should have been) not because of talent but because of the lack of development.
Yes, Shanny is a very good QB coach. But can you really take a guy so few reps like this and in say, a year, development him to the point of running a complex NFL offense against complex NFL D's? Guess we'll find out.
I am actually thrilled the Niners took him. If you forced me to make an even bet, I'd bet this pick will set the Niners back a few years. Like I said I might eat these words some day. But, it wouldn't be the first time.
