Rams43
The 49ers were reportedly interested in acquiring Stafford, but balked at the price.
But now, after seeing Rams scoop him up, they felt compelled to give up three 1sts and a 3rd for the rights to draft the 3rd best QB in this class.
If that isn’t irony, I don’t know what is.
Before we break our arms patting ourselves (the Rams) on the back, a word of caution: the 49ers may have made the right decision by paying the price for the rookie QB over Stafford.
A month ago I did some deep research into which QBs made it the final 4 over the last 10 years - i.e. how often was it a Tier 1, Tier 2, or Tier 3QB, and was it on a big or small contract. Here's what I found:
"QBs on small contracts get to the final 4 approx. 65% of the time....small contracts give you the best shot to make it to the final 4." Post HereBy taking the path the 49ers did they're going to have a rookie QB with a cheap contract for the next 5 years. If they paid for Stafford instead they get a Tier 1 or near Tier 1 QB but with the large contract, they wouldn't be able to fill out the team as well. Even if the rookie QB they draft isn't elite, if he's middle of the pack Tier 2, they'll still be able to compete by being able to surround him with premium free agents.
What we have to hope for is the QB they draft is an utter bust, a Tier 3 or worse. Then their chances of winning are next to nothing.
