When will we learn. While college ball proficiency is an indicator it is by no means a guarantee of NFL success. The so-called "can't mess" or "future HOF" guy is probably as likely to miss as to hit.
We could all list some of the misses, starting with Goff and Wentz. Robinson. Pead. How about Clowney who was supposedly a once in a generation player? He's a pretty good player, but by no means great.
I've said it before but decades of draft stats say that when you add it all up, you have about a 50/50 chance of getting a solid starter in the first round. About 25% in second. About half that in the 3rd round and it goes down (of course) from there.
Yes, all teams aren't equally good at drafting. But it's not like one team manages to get 80% solid starters in round one, and another 20%. And some teams seem to do pretty well with the middle and later picks (I think this is where Snead is best).
How many years have we seen rebuilding teams pile up early draft picks, draft the guys everyone is ga-ga over, and the team still doesn't become anything special. And the guys that are always drafting last (like the Pats until recently) always seem to find some pretty good starters and they stay anywhere from competitive to really good.
Snead has decided to use his 1st rounders less for drafting and more to acquire high level proven NFL talent. Those are the actual can't miss players. In the draft, there is no such thing. That doesn't mean it's the only way to do things successfully. But it is one of the legitimate ways.
And, once you become a team like the Rams, it's interesting how it seems to attract some of the better vets. So it all works together. But I have always been one who thinks the draft is only part of the picture for a team's success and not always the core of it.
Goff was not a miss, like it or not he was part of a great turnaround and helped guide us to a Super Bowl, not too mention has the second most wins in NFL behind only Tom Brady since 2017
Lumping Goff in with the Robinson and Pead'? Really??? C'mon man.....thats a big swing and miss there
