We are looking for value on a budget. Without being in the position to draft the next Aaron Donald at any position.
Donald is once in a generation. So...that wasn't going to happen again anyway.
And when it comes to the 1st round, the Rams would be picking in the 20s. How many 1st round draft picks in the 20s are the big-time game changers you're talking about?
Heck for that matter, look at the results: there is no receiver in the 2017 draft who is significantly better than Kupp (3rd round), and there is no safety in the 2017 draft who is significantly better than Johnson was (3rd round).
What I don't like is using 1st and 2nd round picks for rentals. (Or in one case, a rental that comes with dead money.) Using 1st round picks to trade for top performers you can sign to keep, though---that's fine with me (Ramsey).
