McVay really owned his shortcoming to Goff with this line:
“There are a lot of things when I self-reflect that I wish I was better for him in some instances.”
Did Goff publicly acknowledge the same to McVay?....like from the player POV?
IE. Not playing the game plan up to par or falling short in executing the game strategy due to missed passes or TOs?
I don't quite recall Goff ever saying something like that other than a general platitudes towards the team...never admitting that he let McVay down directly... by not doing right by him. Cuz that's a mature thing to do in a public sports PR breakup-wise. I'm glad McVay admitted to his shortcomings here for the past.
I hope Goff does something like that too...cuz I don't recall seeing Goff say that (other than standard post-game stuff like, "I'd like to have that pass back" or something.). Making nice and wishing former colleagues the best and apologizing for one's shortcomings with regards to the other is good PR and good business for NFL coaches & players. imo
McVay and Goff are to - both - blame for their parts in falling short. McVay didn't handle the PR aspect very well during the weeks before the trade...that's for sure.
He didn't though, STvC. He made blanket statements of the standard issue McVay-style "I have to look at my own contribution too" variety.
I think the one thing he said that rang really true was that he did not communicate. That was the vibe we got. Goff was saying he was surprised by stuff the coach was saying about him in public, for example. It's like McVay didn't COACH. Don't like how your player is doing? Do you complain in public? Or set him down and get communication working? (Which means listening too.)
And I don't care what Goff did or did not say. He's gone, he's not a Ram, and we still have McVay as a coach. HIs ability to look at and address his own issues is what matters. There is no such thing as a Goff v. coach joust and if Goff says things or not, we give McVay points or not. This is nothing like that.
Either McVay is honest about his own issues and fixes them, or not. Better if he is and does.
