The trade value chart probably makes the Carolina offer the best even if Goff was rather generously counted as a late 1st in this years draft.
But, as you point out, if the Lions really like Goff and he can be at least a bridge starter? That’s huge.
We’ll probably never know for sure whether Stafford nixed either the Washington or Carolina deals, much less Denver’s.
Hopefully, this will be a win-win for both Rams and Lions.
My view is that the Lions wanted to treat Stafford well within reason. I don't think they would have traded him if he said he wanted to stay in Detroit and be part of the rebuild. Whats the history on teams dumping their franchise QB who is still playing very well? This isn't a Philip Rivers thing where he only had a year left. Stafford may have 5 good years left. Usually older QBs like Brady, Manning, and Favre pick their teams as FAs. Anyway, I think the Lions wanted to work with Stafford, and not dump him someplace where he felt he was back in the same spot as he was in Detroit, as long as they got adequate compensation. But that was only a part of it. They still liked Goff enough, and the picks were good enough that they took the Rams deal.
Let's face it, the conversations between Holmes and Snead were a lot stronger than with anyone else since they had a very strong connection. Was it a bit of insider trading? Something like that. Holmes could have given the Rams more chances to sweeten the pot and not given the same courtesy to Indy.
All this means to me is that the Rams didn't overpay, but they gave what they had to, to top the Colts offer in the eyes of Detroit. And at least be close to the Carolina offer.
