I think it's OK to say both- that Goff was below average overall when it comes to the entire 2020 season (23rd in passer rating and ESPN's QBR rating, rated 20th by Football Outsiders and 22nd by PFF) AND that he was pretty good in the postseason- especially considering the thumb issue and limited practice pre-SEA. 100.7 QB rating in the two games.

The QB rating calculator rewards efficiency (completion percentage, yards/attempt, not turning the ball over, etc.) as much as it does big plays and yards. And really, that's the story around Goff isn't it? That they need him to be more efficient and minimize mistakes much more so than they need more 'wow' plays from him?

QB rating probably overrates efficiency.

For example, if a QB went 15/15 over 5 straight drives with each pass gaining 3 yards, he would have 5 straight three and outs but a good QB rating of 97.9. Clearly, that rating doesn't reflect that he's failed to gain any 1st downs let alone throw a TD.

QBR on the other hand would be very low.

As for what we need Goff to be, it sounds like McVay wants more than efficiency with minimal mistakes. That's a game manager. We're paying him to do more than that.
I don't disagree with this last paragraph at all. I do see some on this forum use QB rating against Goff when its subpar and the very same guys say QB rating doesn't mean squat when his is good. I just like to see balance.

I'm actually of the school that QB rating is a bit overrated .... the only stat I care about is winning or losing.

So I'm all for replacing Goff for any QB that can come in and win us more games.....they don't grow on trees.

It will mean nothing to me if we bring in someone that leads the league in passing makes splash plays and we go 6-10
