My thoughts are that when McVay started with Goff, he said that he "needs to make it easier because the QB is the toughest position to learn." That led to Goff's initial growth and to things like McVay talking up to the 15 second mark while Goff was at the LOS. But Goff did not progress from that 2017-2018 development. Instead he has regressed to a point prior to his days at Cal. It's gotten to the point where just does not throw the ball away (when he used to in 2018) and taking a sack is heresy (although he has taken them the last few weeks. I surmise that there's a couple of things going on here:
1. Goff has been beaten up. Call it the Bulger Syndrome or the "Kill Kurt" drill, Goff is playing like a wounded animal. One that is not playing with the courage that we had grown to getting used to a short couple of years ago.
2. Goff has always been quick to recover from a bad play - his short memory was a good thing. But in 2020, he had melt downs like the 2nd Qtr of the Miami game. That was ugly. I think that his confidence has been shaken, and he needs a way to get it back. I don't see him finding the deep receivers like the Wolf did.
3. Goff has never had to face the potential loss of his job. I think it was telling how badly he wanted to play this past week. His job is at stake and perhaps that will light a fire inside him. I'd like to see him get more passionate and emotional than the reserved even keeled guy all the time. But will he take the chance when McVay has rewarded his even demeanor?
I'd like to see McVay come up with new plays. The WR screens that worked in weeks 1-4 have lost yardage in recent weeks. Why not a pump fake to the WR screen and get the ball to a RB in the opposite flat? I hate the 5 wides because it tells the defense that a pass is coming. How about a planned bootleg with the Wolf to keep them honest? His planned rollouts for the Wolf worked well because the Cards never saw it coming. More creativity = better calls by McVay. And maybe more passes to Higbee in the red zone (and not to Everett?). This week we'll see if McVay opens things up more. I too hope that the Wolf doesn't get crushed. The Seachicks love to play physical. We have to be up for the task.
GO RAMS!!!!!
