You are right that Goff looked deep first in 2018. THAT was the McVay influence because he said over and over when he first became HC that they read deep to shallow.
That was how his offense ran in Washington and the first few years with us.
Something changed. Do you think McVay went away from reading deep to shallow because he prefers it that way or because he's working with the personnel - i.e. QB - he has?
With the number of deep shots yesterday, I don't think it can be any clearer that it's the QB's decision-making that determines this.
Excellent question, dz. I should have clarified my thought process.
It is my belief that McVay has dialed Goff back in an attempt to reduce turnovers. Reducing turnovers is a good thing, of course, but it appears that McVay has somewhat neutered Goff in the process.
Ironically, it appears that McVay was willing to give Wolford all kinds of rope on deep throws.
So, what to conclude? McVay has lost confidence in Goff or am I all wet with my theory? And maybe McVay felt that he had no choice with Wolford? Or has McVay inexplicably reversed his previous philosophy?

I didn't really want to get into Goff bashing so I declined to say that it also may be an indicator of a lack of trust by McVay in Goff.

I think it comes down to QB vision and processing speed. Both of those have been Goff weaknesses.
If you're not seeing the field clearly and processing slowly then deep shots are a huge turnover risk. So as Goff has been developing in reading defenses, McVay has likey coached him to stick with the safer underneath throws.
