3. Goffs trajectory to me looks like a Flacco or Stafford type. Good, top 12 qb good, but not a guy that will put an offense on his back and carry it. He is still too inconsistent for my taste. And not game to game, its from drive to drive.
That was from after the SF game. Well, his inconsistency reared its ugly head yet again. Everyone can have a bad game. Goff had a bad game. But here in lies my problem with him. I just don't feel I can trust him the way I should in year 5. And maybe thats a me problem. Maybe it isn't. But its clear to me he more of a high end game manager more than he is a difference maker. Can he improve? Absolutely. Am I counting on it? No.
McVay also did him no favors, but at the end of the day, Goff needs to adjust at the LoS and after the snap.
I've looked at that fumble recovery for a TD. Hendo could be at fault, but I'm thinking he wasn't. If Goff made a presnap adjustment to the zero coverage, then Hendo didn't get the message. He would have motioned into the backfield to take on the 6th rusher. And if Goff did, and Hendo didn't hear it, thats on hendo, but then Goff needs to call a TO. I'm thinking Goff just didn't adjust, expecting Hendo to chip on his way by, thats a weird and risky way to take on a zero coverage. And even then, Goff needs to be looking at Hendo for the RB outlet IMMEDIATELY. He never saw it coming. Thats bad QB play.
Anyhow, at some point McVay is going to have to start remodeling his offense to cater to a QB that cannot or just doesn't see the defense as well as a 5th year QB should. Maybe he needs to go back to getting Goff up to the LoS faster and talking into his ear until the coms turn off.
I still like Goff, but I'm not sure he is a needle mover at the position.
In no order I'd take these QBs over Goff in a longterm scenario:
Burrow - he looks like the real deal and is obviously just getting started
Mahomes - duh
Jackson - He might only last 5 years, but they are gonna be some great years
Murray - He seems like he could be a differnce maker with a short stop arm and elite athletic ability
Wilson - Duh
Watson - with the Rams weapons, I'd love this kid
Rodgers - one of the best ever, still enough tread on the tires
Prescott- I'm partial to him, since I loved him in the draft, he just seems like a winner.
2 guys I didn't mention are Herbert and Tua. its just too early on those 2 for me. I also didn't mention Brees, Brady or Rothlisberger. They are at or near the end of the their incredible careers. Same with Rivers. Wentz as much as it pains me has me concerned.
So Goff still falls inside the top 10 as far as furure QBs (for the record, I'd take Lawrence, Fields and Lance ahead of Goff this spring, but then again, I'm a draft nerd so why wouldn't I lol)
One last thing, I think (again its just my opinion) that coming from that Bear Raid offense could be hindering or just flat out hid Goffs shortcomings reading a defense and scanning a field. He did in fact read defenses, but running a hurry up no huddle offense, he was never going to see a complicated defensive scheme and never see a zero coverage scheme.
