There is a lot of talent being wasted on O this year. No way this O should still be sputtering after 8 games. C’mon...

McVay is setting the offense up for positive plays but his QB seems to be letting him down. Against poor teams, deficiencies can be masked but sometimes, a QB has got to make the right reads and know where his protection is.

The film shows that Goff was missing reads. Football 101 is to attack where the defender is coming from on a blitz and Goff was constantly trying to go away from it instead. On top of that, the film also shows that the play was often to the opposite of where Goff had decided to go. He's struggling to see things properly and leaving positive...even big plays on the field. Quick, easy, line of sight throws for good gains are being unrecognized while higher risk, tighter coverage throws are being attempted.

I don't put that on McVay. If the offense is presenting positive plays and the QB is missing them, that's not the coach's fault. Granted, McVay could simply take the ball out of Goff's hands and run it but would it really be good coaching to abandon what your team is designed to do, especially when the rest of the offense seems to be working? I could agree with that line of thought if we were down to our 3rd string QB or just signed a guy off the street who had no time to acclimate or practice. But Goff should not have those types of restrictions. This isn't Steve Walsh who just can't physically do the job and has to be compensated for. Goff is supposed to be a top 10...top 5 according to some, QB. How can a top QB not be trusted to recognize fronts and hit hot receivers?
