Rams' O line was a strength back then. Not easy to break into that group.
I remember wondering they drafted Harrah and France at a time when Charlie Cowan and Joe Scibelli were still playing well. In a couple of years I had my answer.
Also, remember Doug Smith was a darned good backup before he took over at center. He played guard for Harrah in 79 (then he got hurt) then when Harrah held out, he kept Harrah from starting until he, again, got hurt.
But yeah, Jackie could have been a great guard---and ams thought so, because as you remember they groomed him for it.
But in 1979, they drafted Kent Hill, but he was not ready day 1 so they went with John Williams to replace mack, I guess, until Hil lwas ready, then Williams got hurt and Hill had the job until he was traded as part of Evertt deal and Newberry took over left guard.
Slater, instead of taking over for Mack, took over for Williams and never looked back
