Example ... how many times has an oline given up as few sacks as the Rams line did in 2019 (leading the league in the least sacks allowed) and be so universally trashed?
There were problems pass protecting with that OL, our eyes did not fool us. And in the games where they gave up 7 or more pressures they went 3-7.
If your OL is giving up pressure, and you are high in attempts, AND low in sacks, being low in sacks is most likely on the qb. If that qb is not game-changing level mobile, like Wilson, then to avoid sacks he is sacrificing something (usually timing, rhythm, mechanics, and accuracy) to get rid of the ball.
Because an OL is effective at running the ball does not automatically mean they can pass protect.
And as we know there were 2 OLs last year. The first played for 9 games and was shaky, with both OTs playing poorly and 2 newbies inside. In the final 7 games Whitworth played better and they also started 3 inexperienced injury replacements. The 2nd OL did better than the first but it still struggled against teams that could bring pressure. They gave up a total of 18 pressures combined against Chi, Arz (twice), and Seattle (avg. 4.5 a game), and the Rams won those games. They gave up 28 pressures against Balt, Dal, and SF (avg. 9.3) and they lost those games.
