I was not referring to players we could have had in that draft.
I was really speaking as to what I hope we do this year. Last year I was hoping we would grab Cody Ford. Other guys who had pedigree were Jawaan Taylor, Dalton Risner, Eric McCoy & E Jenkins to name a few. They were all well thought of highly respected prospects. I am hoping we can get a guy like this, a name I will recognize when we make the selection at #52. I pay enough attention to college football and the pre draft stuff to know when we draft a guy with pedigree vs a no name that Les Snead thinks is another undiscovered gem like Noteboom or Allen.
Looking at Kromer's left OTs over the years going back to the Saints in 2009. How many were known among fans as "well thought of highly respected prospects" (ie. name brand picks recognizable even to fans). Bear in mind that Kromer's OLs were always considered good.
SAINTS
2009. Jermon Bushrod, 4th round pick, 2007. No starts before 2009.
2010. Bushrod.
2011. Bushrod.
2012. Bushrod.
BEARS
2013. Bushrod. Followed AK there as a FA.
2014. Bushrod.
Note: Kromer leaves the Bears in 2015, and who is their LOT In 2015? Charles Leno, 7th round pick, 2014. In 2015 Leno replaces an injured Bushrod, and remains their starter through 2019.
BILLS
2015. Glenn, 2nd round pick AK inherits.
2016. Glenn.
RAMS
Whitworth, 2nd round pick by the Bengals in 2016 but the Bengals let him walk cause they think he is done.
So Kromer has 2 guys in inherits who meet your definition of a name brand OT. He also either directly coaches or drafts and develops 2 lower picks, a 4th and a 7th. Since all of his lines except 2019 are considered good, this all suggests that he doesn't need a name brand LOT. He apparently knows something about finding and coaching them.
