The guy got ragdolled at LG last season, his physicality is nowhere near the level it has to be. If we were to insert him at LT he'd get destroyed by the powerful type ends and still lose enough vs the speed types on top of that. Whit is extremely physical in the run game, and we're trying to actually get better in the run game we cannot afford to get even less physical.
I see zero chance the Rams still believe he's a LT they can count on. Will they let him compete and hope he develops? Sure. But he is NOT the guy you look at and say "Oh yeah we're good there."
Which means that if a guy who has a chance to be a starting LT is there at 52 they need to take him. You can mess around and find many positions on the OL mid to late in the draft. But LT is much harder to do that there just aren't enough of those dancing bear type dudes. Whit will be 39 this year, we don't have a round 1 pick next year, and protecting our young pocket QB is crucial. Fans may hate it, but for me personally if they can get lucky with one of those guys I'll feel a lot better about our OL moving forward.
Boom playing at LG and out of position struggled, Merlin, no doubt about it, although he was showing signs of improvement week to week.
But he looked damned good at LOT, the actual position he was drafted for, when given the chance. And we are talking about him playing at LOT, so I don’t get the pessimism about Boom if he’s healthy.
Meanwhile, we have apparent critical needs at RB, ILB, Edge, and maybe a C for next year. I don’t think it’s a hard decision based upon available information.
