The book is out on a few Rams and its not good.
Goff- Doesn't like pressure (no QB does) especially pressure up the middle. Get him uncomfortable early and his accuracy and decision making suffer greatly.
Gurley - Little to no burst and not much in the cut/jump cutting ability limiting what he can do on the edges.
Corbett/ Blythe - Lightweights in a heavyweight division. You can push them into the backfield almost at will.
So what that tells every DC is that to slow down and beat the Rams offense all you have to do is press the middle of the OL. Clog it, push the pocket back, really anything because thats where Gurley is running and thats where Goff will be passing from. It also really nullifies the playaction since you are clogging it as you push the pocket.
Its the same reason Goff has been having good luck lately on rollouts, McVay is moving him away from the inside pressure.
Obviously there is nothing that can be done this year, but something has to be done to get a RB that can press the edges and some interior OL that can at the very least hold their own. Goff is never going to be fleet of foot, but he has to do something to manage the pressure better so it doesn't effect him the whole game so when he does get his shots, he can hit them. Easier said then done, but thats his job and he is paid handsomely to do it.
Now obviously not every team can press like Dallas did today or the 9ers or the Ravens, but its a big enough issue that something is going to have to be changed.
Agree on Goff. I've called him a triggerfish in the past. One of those salt water tropical fishes that look beautiful when all the conditions are right, perfect temp and salt levels. But when those conditions are a bit off, the triggerfish goes belly up. That is Goff right now. He needs a good interior OL, otherwise big problems. OTOH, so do most QBs. Sean Payton makes sure to have quality guys at G-C-G for Brees every year. McVay needs to do that for Goff.
Gurley isn't as good as Chris Carson who was drafted in the 6th round. Enough said.
You punch the Rams in the mouth and they fold. That starts up front. We just aren't tough enough in the trenches. McVay will address that in the offseason is my guess.
