Good question, ferragamo. Here’s my take.
Boom has impressed a quality OL coach in Kromer since being drafted. In meetings, when questioned about playbook or assignments, on the practice field. Boom is a quiet one but comes across as intelligent.
Boom has had numerous ‘vets day off’ practices relieving Whit in ‘18 and learned and impressed his coaches while doing so.
Boom played exceedingly well in the 49er game in ‘18 that you mentioned. Looked like a 5 year vet to my eyes. That matters.
About his play at LG. First, he was playing out of position and deserves some slack for that. Plus, he was improving when injured. I think that’s very relevant and Kromer seemed very frustrated by that. Very telling, IMO.
Moreover, Boom started at LG at exactly the same time when Whit started deteriorating on his left and Allen was learning on the job on his right. Hardly an ideal scenario, don’t you think?
The fact that he was injured is neither here nor there when judging him as a future LOT, so why did you even mention it?
Boom can still work on his upper body strength while rehabbing his knee. This lack of NFL strength is really the only criticism that I’ve read about. Should be fine there by September.
Bottom line is I see a big, strong, intelligent player with good feet as a legit candidate to be our starting LOT next season. A player that Kromer seems to really like. It’s a shame that his injury will rob him of so many experience gathering snaps, but it is what it is.
Did I mention that Boom would be an extremely cap friendly choice at LOt?
For my money, I would much prefer that future resources be devoted to either interior OL or maybe even RT if they’ve lost confidence in Hav.
