There is a general lack of patience, ZN, and it isn't just limited to sports; it's with most things; I would apply it to politics also. Information has become more important than content.
So, no, I don't think most of the media are good; I think they form opinions based on very little, if any at all, thoughtful consideration or research.
But, I'm afraid, it's a necessary evil, a sad sign of our times. We live in a world where most people relate more to a soundbite taken out of context than they do to a Shakespeare sonnet because they haven't the patience or depth of perception for considered appreciation of the latter. The name of the game is stimulation: sensation over substance, appearance over process.
I hear hollow statements and opinions on the radio, and read them in varied media every other day, and it's perfectly evident, at least to me, when I hear or see them but, unfortunately, that is what sells to consumers and what gets ratings and views.
As far as JG is concerned, the media definitely rushed to judgement on him before it had an adequate sample size; I think that is why there was so much disbelief surrounding his play in 2017.
