In fact, looking at the drafts since then, there's more evidence than not this was a Fisher special, including Snead's own words that he doesn't see value for Oline in the early rounds. And since that pick, there as a second rounder, and all the rest have been 3rds and later.
The directive for Snead was to draft the 2 likeliest HOF talents in the first round. Fisher said it repeatedly before the draft. GRob was a freak prospect who Daniel Jeremiah said was the most likeliest guy in the entire draft to be in the HOF in 20 years.
The directive has changed with McVay. Character, smarts, and attitude play a much larger role in the draft.
That could only mean that was their approach to ranking players long before the draft when they were setting the board.
Meanwhile the approach now is entirely the same. The big difference is, how they agree to rank players has changed.
In both cases, Snead is not an uber-style GM, he defines himself and his role as finding players who fit what the coaches look for. That would be as true then as it is now. In the case of both Robinson and Mack (who they tried to trade up for), the coach most directly involved would be Boudreau, who has spoken highly of Robinson's physical gifts on a couple of occasions (each time making it clear he saw GR as coachable.)
