Oh, c’mon...
5 years for $110 million with $70 million guaranteed is hardly a disrespectful OR lowball offer.
And you’ve personalized this negotiation far too much. Terms like disrespect, lowball, and AD “problem” are too emotional. It’s just business. Both sides are trying to protect their own best interests and at a very high stakes level, at that.
When players hold out of training camp, preseason, OTAs etc. during contract negotiations or disputes, other players, coaches, team mgmt, agent, and MOST fans realize it is all about the business side of the sport. IF the Rams tag AD twice and let him walk (which I REALLY hope is not what happens) it will be a business decision (wise or not) and will be viewed that way by the professionals.
And no one knows that WAS the offer.
I am not sure why anyone assumes it was.
And business includes things like players asking too much, teams offering too little (and us not knowing which it is). Teams make mistakes like that doing business. It happens. So do players.
If the Rams try to tag Donald it will be a lowball (that's just pure math, the tag amount is a lowball--that is an objective fact) and my bet is he demands a trade and the Rams will have no choice but to trade him.
That's all speculation right now, on every bit of it. Except the tag amount. That's a lowball compared to Donald's market range That's purely factual.
I don't agree with you though that the Rams tagging Donald would be seen as a pure business decision. It will be a morale issue having to do with how the Rams treat a great player who did everything right on and off the field. It will have an effect on how the front office is seen. I doubt most people in the league shrug and go "it's business." Still speculation on both sides (you and me both) BUT it will be seen as bad business. It will not sit well.
Since we all really know nothing, to me, a balanced discussion will include all sides of this.
So I see some people assuming it's the player and that treating him badly is "business." Well there are other views on that. A balanced account includes those other views.
It really is possible the Rams could screw this up. That's whether any of us like to hear that or not. So that actually IS one of the possibilities. If we're going to name some of the possibilities we might as well name others.
That;s one of the many things on all sides that has to be said if the conversation is going to be genuinely far-ranging and balanced.
