I think the Rams pay him fifth year option. Tag him twice then let him go and collect a third round pick the year after.

I hope they have more class than to do that to one of the greatest players the team has ever had.

And the suggestion that they should treat him badly that way is based on the entirely empty idea that the problem is Donald. There are no real grounds for that assumption. Yet some act as if it's known, verified, and true.

On top of it, the idea that a player of Donald's stature would sit still for a lowball tag number and be treated like that seems like a stretch to me. If it came to that, if he just stayed out and demanded a trade, what choice would the Rams have.

I think most of this "blame Donald" angst comes from the mistaken idea that the team can't fit Donald and Goff and keep other players too within the cap. Sure they can.

...

Oh, c’mon...

5 years for $110 million with $70 million guaranteed is hardly a disrespectful OR lowball offer.

And you’ve personalized this negotiation far too much. Terms like disrespect, lowball, and AD “problem” are too emotional. It’s just business. Both sides are trying to protect their own best interests and at a very high stakes level, at that.

As to AD refusing to play and demanding a trade? Not sure that that would go over well with suitor teams, tbh. Besides, the Rams would still hold all the cards. He couldn’t earn money during his prime years as long as he held out. Plus, the Rams could hold a trade auction for a kings ransom in picks and players. And that would be their WORST possible scenario. Lol.

Care to comment on either of the 2 points I made in the OP?

Particularly where I illustrated how AD will lose more than he will ever gain should he fail to extend this year? Best he can hope for, financially, is to win a battle and lose the war by not extending.

He’s been painted into a corner for 3 years, minimum.
