After reading many posts and articles, then letting my thoughts kinda percolate, I have a few thoughts.
Yeah, Snead is The Man when it comes to bold offseason moves. Goff, Whit, Watkins, and now Peters. I love that “No guts, no glory” attitude in Snead.
Pending the compensation involved, I rate this as a very good to brilliant move designed to take us a giant step closer to the Promised Land. We’ve already been assured that this year’s 1st is not involved, so I think we’re leaning more toward the brilliant side.
Yeah, Peters has had hothead issues. Issues that burned his bridges with the Chiefs and must be corrected with the Rams. But I give the Rams credit for presumably having had a conversation with the young man to determine his willingness to correct himself. Plus a ton of probable background information was probably secured before pulling the trigger on this trade.
I think that the Rams are more than capable of helping this young man. Coaches like McVay, Wade, and Aubrey Pleasant for starters. And respected players to show the proper way and even take him aside, if necessary. On D alone there’s AD, Brockers, Ogletree, and Joyner. On O there’s Goff, Gurley, Big Whit, Sully, Saffold, Woods, Watkins(I think), and Kupp. Heck, the whole locker room is about “we, not me”, a perfect environment for Peters if he’s at all willing to assimilate.
So, that was the potential downside. What about the upside? Where to start?
Peters is young, healthy, and verrrrry inexpensive for 2 years. We save $15 million on the cap vs TruJo’s salary last year, for example.
Peters is elite. A clear upgrade to TruJo. Can play any scheme Wade desires.
Peters virtually takes away half the field from the opposing QB. That’s beyond huge. If we can get a competent CB for the other side then Wade has his dream secondary. A cornerstone of a top Wade D. Just imagine Peters, NRC, Joyner, and JJ plus X outside opposite Peters. Dang!
As others have said, this move shouts out that the Rams are shooting for the SB and that they think that they are within sniffing distance of it. What a great feeling that is.
I expect another possible bold move before the draft is over. Might be a player trade, a FA, or a surprise move within the draft. We’re off to a great start already and another great offseason like last year should put us into the thick of the deep playoffs.
Kudos to Snead and the Rams on this Peters trade.
1st, Ian Rapaport isn't what I would call a guarantee on not giving up a 1st. 2nd, doesn't it strike you as odd that a top 5 CB at age 25 making 1.7 mil this year is even on the trading block, let alone for less then one 1st round pick let alone multiple 1st rounders? Top 5 CBs don't get traded.
3rd, yes he has hothead issues? You mean like choking a coach while at Washington? That is a hothead issue? I would call it felony assault. Or getting released from said program for multiple issues?
So players coaches like Andy Reid (the ultimate players coach) and Chris Petersen couldn't reign him in but somehow Sean McVay will? What makes you think that, other then blind optimism? And as far as players guiding him in the right direction. Look no further then Eric Berry, one of, if not the most respected player in the NFL right now. He was in the same backfield as Peters and he couldn't do it. Neither could Justin Houston. Or how about Derrick Johnson with his 13 years of NFL experience? 13 years. But you expect a bonehead like Tree with his whopping 5 years to reign him in. OK
You mention the upside, but you missed a ton of downside. Being a locker room cancer is a huge downside. Chris Petersen thought more of his team then winning when he cut him in college. Andy Reid signed Micheal Vick
straight out of federal prison, but traded a top 30 player in the NFL making less then 2 million dollars. Andy Reid drafted Tyreek Hill, who in 2014
plead guilty to choking and punching his pregnant girlfriend, but he traded a top 5 CB in his prime making less then 2 million. he is the human version of gangrene. he has already been cut off of 2 football programs before it was too late.
The other downside is if he misses games due to suspension. I'm going to assume the Rams are depending on him for 16 games.
And what if he doesn't pan out? No big deal right? Well, he takes a spot from another CB the Rams could have signed in FA or the draft and just slows down the secondary's rebuild or retool.
Peters was my top rated CB that year, but I had said at the time he was too risky to draft. I hope he gets straightened out, but some people just like to watch the world burn. He has to want to change. So far history tells me he can't or doesn't want to change. Maybe going into his contract years is enough of a motivator. You better hope it is.
