And my point about McVay dovetails - no surprise here - with my 'theory' about his instincts as a ... here's that word again ... tactician.
One of the things we all have grown to love about this guy is his ability to think forward. To think several plays ... maybe even possessions ... ahead of the curve. Everyone raves about how he has put Goff in positions to succeed. No one argues that. No one.
So, my point is ... why would it not be his perspective to do the same for his defense?
Yes ... he wanted to win that game yesterday. Obviously.
My guess, though ... purely a guess, but one based on what I perceive this guy to be all about ... is that he was thinking ahead yesterday. He wasn't just worried about the Dallas game. He was thinking about games down the line when his offense struggles, maybe ... and he needs the defense to step up and be a closer.
By kicking the FG yesterday ... virtually an automatic three points ... I believe ... I suspect ... I think ... what he was not only doing by making sure Dallas would have to score a TD to win the game ... he was planting a seed for his defense and its coaches. Telling them ... 'I have complete confidence in you to close this game out.'
Maybe I'm wrong. Completely wrong. I offer that possibility.
But when I consider McVay ... the type of coach and person he is ... I can't help but think that fits
him.
