You can't keep comparing an unrestricted free agent contract to someone who DOES NOT HAVE THAT LEVERAGE for another two years.

also, it seems the Rams have already offered him more money then Suh, but its still not enough...probably because he wants to be able to renegotiate after a couple years to get even more money.

Don't think for one minute that the Rams aren't going to lose out on some players because they're paying ridiculous money to a DT that isn't even on the field for every snap and have never even been .500 with him out there all 16 games.

It makes no difference. No one gets more than the market allows and the market was going 19 M in 2015 for a top DT. Detroit didn;t want to pay that, Miami did. Donald would ask for what the market would allow, same as Carr, who got 25 M at qb without being a free agent and in fact if Oakland had used their option, 2 years before free agency. No one in Oakland was saying "ah yes but we have you for 2 more years so jeopardize your future contract prospects with us by risking injury and playing cheap until we are forced to pay you later on." Naw, they saw the market for qbs was 25 M and that;s what Carr got, 2 years before being a free agent.

Meanwhile with Donald and the Rams, there is nothing---absolutely nothing---that indicartes the Rams are playing hardball. Apparently their offer IS in the 20 M range, and the hangup appears to be not money but the opt-out clause. hardball

ALL teams dedicate around 50-55% of their cap to 8-10 big contracts, all teams lose out on some players because of it, and the good ones make the right choices and win anyway. That;s just the nature of the cap. That gets down then to what you think an elite DT is worth. I say they are worth a lot. They're very rare. It;s much harder to find an elite DT than a solid to good starting qb. In fact it's easier to find productive outside rushers (either 4/3 DEs or 3/4 OLBs). That means if you are one of the few teams to ever have an elite DT, you have good odds of adding an outside rusher to that. That combo, when you have it, is the kind of cornerstone you can build a top D around.
