Question. Is it going to cost the Rams more NOW or 2-4 years from now?
It's fascinating to me how so many here just do not understand this simple math.
Is this going to be a big number in 2017? Sure, but it's only going to be that much MORE down the road.
Also if the Rams truly don't want to pay him I'm fairly certain there are multiple teams who will so just trade him and move on.
There are all sorts of hints out there that it's the structure. Like the rumored opt-out clause.
I hadn't heard the opt-out rumor. It would be interesting to know the actual facts of all this but I guess the total truth will never be known.
Rumor is that AD's agent wants a 3 year opt out clause, RFIP.
So that he can hold the Rams hostage again in 3 freaking years!
That would be an insane deal breaker!
But if he signs a 5 year deal with all G jack in first 3 years then it's completely ok for RAMS to walk away after the 3rd year if they choose???
Yeah, this is pretty much the sticking point. The teams can cancel contracts at their whim but the players can't.
The 3 year opt out thing aligns with the rumors of the agent trying to set a precedent and change the way contracts are done.
To be honest that does level the playing field and makes things more equitable between players and teams.
The Rams, OTOH, are trying to tie AD up for as long as possible. There was also a rumor of a "lifetime" contract. That clearly benefits the team.
Longer contracts benefit the teams; shorter contracts benefit the players especially when the player is on a HOF trajectory.
For AD it's a huge deal because he's already 26. A 6 year contract means he would be 32 when he is up for a 3rd contract. A 3 year contract or an opt out after the 3rd year means he would only be 29 and still in his prime for his 3rd contract.
For the Rams, an opt out at 3 years is a none starter. If the new contract were to start in the 2018 season, that only gets them two extra years on the current contract.
If these are the sticking points, It's going to be an uphill battle for AD to win this because I suspect the NFL and other owners will be putting pressure on the Rams to not cave.
There's no way the league wants contract opt outs for the players. However, that is the most fair thing.
