I am stating as my opinion under the context of Aaron Donald will not be what takes the Rams to the Promise Land. Is it worth trading him for some choice picks and maybe a starter? Then the question is if the Rams make a trade, will they draft difference makers? They have not been very successful.
I am not arguing what the market dictates for salaries, just is it prudent for the Rams...
Contracts aren't decided that way.
There is no agreed upon system which says "pay this guy this much according to the relative value of their contribution."
Contracts work this way.
If you don't pay an amount the market says another team will.
So right now qbs get 25 M. That's just the market. The 2 most recent big contracts, Carr and Luck, were in that range. 2 years ago it was 21 M.
So far the top DT contract is 19 M. Even when someone INEVITABLY passes that amount (because markets always go up) it still won't be qb money.
By the time the very top DTs start getting 25 M, qbs will be getting 30 M.
