This idea that he'll settle for less now doesn't make a lot of sense. Why would he do that? He knows he has the Rams over a bit of a barrel now. Any discount he'd give them to sign a long term deal now would be nominal and not nearly worth the risk associated with doing it.

If he has a breakout season this year, they still have leverage with the franchise tag. They can give him the big money, long term deal then, which again won't be that much more than any big money, long term deal he'd be willing to sign now.
