why Does Snead want to do this when he's gotten burned on extending iffy players in the past, Austin, Foles, and now he's talking about Watkins?
If he signs Watkins long term and Sammy gets hurt Snead will leave the Rams with a mess, cause chances are Snead will get fired and won't care at that point.
Demoff needs to step in and stop Snead if he wants to extend Watkins.
Snead has said that the Watkins injury issue was fully explored, max. And he said that it didn't appear to be a problem. What more could he do?
Also, I understand that other WR's have come back from identical injuries and done quite well, including Julio Jones. It's hardly unique, so there is that.
It's a risk/reward thing. Risk a 2nd vs gaining a proven #1 WR talent. No brainer for me.
Besides, you don't acquire a 24 year old starting player via trade UNLESS you intend to extend him. The whole point was to lock up a potential Pro Bowl caliber player at a position of need for 5+ years. They never intended to just rent Watkins for this season. The extension decision was already made when this trade was executed.
Another thing. Let Watkins practice and play before signing him to that extension. I think that that is the plan, anyway. If he's healthy, then extend him, by all means. If he later gets injured, then that's the way it goes. Injuries can and will happen to other players, too. Can't blame Snead if that should happen.
I think this Watkins trade is looking like a brilliant move, tbh. This FO is serious about fielding a winning team. The multiple moves of the last 7 months tells us that.
